The Shilajit market is growing fast, and unfortunately so are the fakes. Counterfeit Shilajit made from coal tar, soil extracts, or mixed with fillers is sold widely — especially online. Here’s how to tell if what you’re buying is the real thing.
1. The Dissolve Test
Drop a small piece of Shilajit into a glass of warm water. Real Shilajit dissolves completely within a few minutes, turning the water a dark golden-brown or reddish colour. No sediment, no chunks left behind. Fake Shilajit often leaves residue or doesn’t dissolve properly.
2. The Flame Test
Hold a small amount of Shilajit near a flame. Pure Shilajit does not catch fire or burn with a flame. It will bubble and expand, leaving behind an ash. If it catches fire or melts like plastic, it’s not real.
3. The Stretch Test
At room temperature, real Shilajit is soft and sticky — you can stretch it between your fingers like a thick resin. If it’s hard, powdery, or crumbles, it’s either fake or heavily processed with fillers.
4. The Freeze Test
Put real Shilajit in the refrigerator for an hour. It should become hard and brittle — you can break it cleanly. Take it out and warm it in your hand; it softens again. This temperature-responsive behaviour is a hallmark of authentic Shilajit.
5. Check the Source
The best Shilajit comes from high-altitude regions above 10,000 feet. Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan, the Altai Mountains, and parts of Nepal are known sources. Ask your seller where their Shilajit is harvested. If they can’t tell you, that’s a warning sign.
6. Lab Testing
Reputable sellers provide lab test results showing the fulvic acid content, heavy metal levels, and absence of contaminants. If a brand doesn’t offer any proof of testing, you’re taking a risk.
